AUDI SPORT QUATTRO S1 E2 SPORT LEGEND MODEL | COBI 24668 

Building set of the last and most extreme version of the legendary Audi Quattro special from 1985. The vehicle is recreated in the typical white and yellow colour combination with printed details. The distinctive features of the car are the massive front bumper and the double rear wing. The scene is completed by a racing driver in a white racing suit and a podium. The building set is produced under the official license of Audi AG.

The vehicle was created through continuous development of the original Audi Quattro from 1980. It was followed by the first rally version, which still had many shortcomings, and due to increasingly strong competition Audi had to develop a completely new car. In 1984, the Audi Sport Quattro was introduced with a shortened wheelbase, higher performance and a new aluminium five-cylinder engine. The next step came in 1985 with the S1 rally version, which received an even more powerful turbocharged five-cylinder engine, a six-speed gearbox and more than 500 horsepower depending on engine settings. However, this was still not enough against the constantly improving competition. Audi therefore prepared the final evolution.

At the 1985 Rallye San Remo, Audi presented the peak of its development – the Sport Quattro S1 E2, of which only 214 units were produced. At first glance, the car impressed with its huge aerodynamic wings and distinctive front bumper. Behind the new appearance was improved cooling for the brakes and engine, increased downforce at high speeds, an anti-lag system reducing turbocharger delay, more than 500 horsepower and, in qualifying setup, up to around 600 horsepower.

The Rallye San Remo took place at the end of September and beginning of October and combined fast asphalt stages with demanding mountain sections. It was here that the advantages of the Quattro all-wheel-drive system and the more than 500 horsepower turbocharged five-cylinder engine fully showed themselves. Walter Röhrl and his co-driver Christian Geistdörfer set the pace from the very beginning and gradually built a significant lead. At the finish, they won by more than six minutes ahead of the reigning World Champion Timo Salonen driving the Peugeot 205 T16 E2 – an extraordinary achievement in modern World Rally Championship history.

It was the first and at the same time the last World Championship victory for this Audi version. A few months later, Group B was cancelled after a series of tragic accidents and Audi withdrew from the World Rally Championship. San Remo therefore remained the final great triumph of this legendary generation of rally cars.
