You know that:
- In 1983, representatives from Italy, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Spain met in a secret meeting to set the parameters for the future European FEFA fighter aircraft.
- Two important parameters were established as the main requirements. The ability to take off and land on a short runway and the ability to fight at a distance without visual contact.
- France also insisted on the aircraft's ability to operate from aircraft carriers, but failed to reach agreement with its partners and withdrew from the project in 1985.
- The first DA.1 prototype took off from a Bavarian airfield on 27 March 1994.
- Seven prototypes were built for flight. The tests were successful and the required parameters were achieved. One accident also occurred during the test flights when the crew had to eject after engine failure.
- The aircraft was named Eurofighter Typhoon during a ceremony at the Farnborough Air Show on 2 September 1998.
- The name of the aircraft, which symbolises strength, was agreed by all the countries involved. In the NATO code designation, these aircraft have the call sign EF-2000.
- The delta-winged fighter has excellent lift and, thanks to its duck wings, exceptional manoeuvrability.
- The airframe construction consists of 82% super-modern composite materials which has reduced the weight by 15% compared to competing machines.
- Series production is still underway and is divided between partner countries according to the following scheme: left wing - Italy, right wing - Spain, front and rear fuselage - UK, central fuselage - Germany.
- An interesting piece of equipment is the Captor-M pulse radar, which is capable of searching for a target at a range of up to 185 km. In conjunction with the PIRATE system, it can track up to 200 targets at a time.
- As the Eurofighter is considered to be an extremely high quality aircraft, many countries outside Europe have expressed interest in purchasing it. Current Typhoon users include Italy, Kuwait, Germany, Oman, Austria, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Spain and soon to be added Egypt, Indonesia and Turkey.
- The approximate price of the machine is €90,000,000.
- About 650 units have been produced so far.
