• The Alpine Wall is the third largest fortification system after the Maginot Line and the Atlantic Wall.
• The defensive line was originally built by Italy against Austria, which the Italians distrusted even after joining the Third Reich.
• Most of the bunkers were located in difficult mountainous terrain. Some could only be accessed by cable car.
• Many strong points took advantage of steep rock faces and suitable natural formations whose strategic position could cover a pass or valley where an enemy army could be expected to advance.
• Modern bunkers of the type 15000 ,,Opera" took the form of fortresses or heavily armed detached structures.
