Did you know:
- The ship bears the name of the Prussian minister and later German Chancellor Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck-Schönhausen.
- Construction of the ship began on July 1, 1936, and Adolf Hitler was also present at the ceremonial launch.
- People are simply incorrigible, and the manufacturer Blohm & Voss also declared this ship unsinkable. As we know today, this was not true.
- Work on the battleship Bismarck cost a total of 200 million Reichsmarks, which is approximately €820,000,000 today.
- Germany falsified the actual displacement, which was 50,900 t, by stating only 35,000 t in the official documentation in order not to violate the German-British agreement.
- The vessel was equipped with eight 380 mm caliber guns capable of firing a 750 kg projectile over a distance of 36 kilometers.
- Some parts of the ship were armored with Wotan chromium-nickel steel with a thickness of up to 360 mm.
- The British pilot who seriously damaged the Bismarck with a torpedo from the obsolete Swordfish aircraft was named Jock Moffat.
- The battleship Bismarck was sunk on May 27, 1941, at 10:45 a.m. after a relentless battle with Allied naval and air forces.
- The sinking of the Bismarck on the order of W. Churchill was very important for strengthening the morale of the British army and changed the Allies’ perception of Germany’s alleged invincibility.
- In 1989, R. Ballard discovered the wreck of the Bismarck at a depth of 4,800 m, and the photographs taken show an almost undamaged hull; thus, the ship most likely went down only after the opening of the sea valves so that it would not fall into Allied hands.
