The German Jagdtiger tank destroyer building set in 1:28 scale offers exceptionally detailed craftsmanship in the winter “broken” camouflage used on the Western Front at the turn of 1944 and 1945 during Operation Nordwind. The model is designed with an emphasis on realism and play value, making it appealing to collectors as well as military technology enthusiasts. The highlight of the model is the removable roof of the fighting compartment, allowing a detailed view into the crew interior. Inside, you will find a well‑crafted recoil system of the main gun and stored 128 mm ammunition along the walls. Under the rear cover lies a faithfully reproduced Maybach engine, which can be removed and displayed separately. The exterior features realistic details such as spare track links, a towing cable, and mounted tools along the sides of the vehicle. The gun has an adjustable elevation, the hatches can be opened, and the tank tracks are fully functional for smooth movement. The set also includes a figure of the commander of schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 653, as well as a radio operator and driver.

“Unattainable luxury.” That is how the German high command referred to this heavy tank behind A. Hitler’s back, as he insisted on developing bigger and bigger weapons. The Jagdtiger, built on the Tiger II chassis, was the heaviest and best-armoured tank ever to enter serial production. By 1944, however, the Third Reich no longer had the resources to produce such giants, which is reflected in the total of only 88 units manufactured. Slow and clumsy, the tank was nevertheless a feared opponent. While the Jagdtiger could destroy enemy vehicles at distances up to 3.5 km, it could itself withstand fire even from close range.

Combat operations of the Jagdtigers were significantly limited by fuel shortages — the tank consumed approximately 1000 litres per 100 km. The real threat to the German tank destroyer came mainly from Allied aircraft and their 30 mm cannons capable of penetrating the 40 mm roof armour. Interestingly, each tank was delivered with two types of tracks. Narrow 660 mm tracks were used exclusively for loading onto railway wagons and for transport to the front. The wider 800 mm tracks were used for actual driving. Due to the tank’s enormous weight, driving on the narrow tracks was forbidden, and crews faced severe punishment for violating this rule. Changing the tracks was a demanding operation. With each combat track link weighing 62 kg and 47 links per side, one full track weighed nearly 3 tons.

The combat deployment of Jagdtigers is still debated today. Well documented is the deployment of four vehicles sent by Major General Heinz Kokott to positions near the village of Chaumont in anticipation of an American attack. In the ensuing battle, the four Jagdtigers destroyed 18 American Sherman tanks. 

A major advantage — but also a weakness — was the long and heavy 128 mm gun. The long barrel overhang put strain on its mounting when driving off‑road, and the crew had to repeatedly recalibrate the gun to maintain accuracy.

“I was the commander of Jagdtiger number 305004, which is now part of the collection of the Tank Museum in Bovington. In April 1945, we were sent to defensive positions near Berlin, where we encountered Soviet IS‑2 tanks. Their tanks were well armoured, but their guns lacked sufficient firepower. In a single day, we destroyed three IS‑2s and damaged two more without suffering any damage ourselves. The war ended for us when we hit a mine. We had to abandon the Jagdtiger.”
