MODEL JAGDPANZER 38 (T) CHWAT | COBI 2670

The building set with rich accessories featuring the insignia of the Home Army is set during the Warsaw Uprising period. The tank with the inscription Chwat ("Brave One") has a cannon with adjustable elevation, an axe mounted on the left side, and a tow rope coiled at the rear. The tank superstructure cover can be removed to reveal the detailed crew compartment and the Praga engine. On the cover, there are also several spare track links and an MG machine gun with a drum magazine. The tank tracks are functional, allowing the model to easily move on non-slip surfaces. The set also includes a figure of Sergeant Franciszek Jablonski with the famous "Do broni!" ("To Arms!") poster by M. Jurgielewicz, the most well-known symbol of the Warsaw Uprising. The 2-in-1 building set contains two sets of printed bricks, so each builder can decide whether to complete the model with the Home Army insignia or German unit markings.

The requirement for a new light assault gun was issued by the German Armament Office in January 1944. The condition was a low silhouette and a 75 mm caliber gun. This led to the creation of a tank destroyer based on the Czechoslovak L-38 tank chassis with a PaK 39 L/48 gun. Serial production began in the ČKD and Škoda Plzeň factories in April 1944 after approval by Adolf Hitler. The vehicle was equipped with a reliable Praga engine and later with a more powerful Tatra TD 3 engine.

In total, more than 2,800 units were produced in four versions by the end of the war.

The light and agile Hetzer was a dangerous weapon but suffered from several drawbacks that the enemy could exploit. The weak side and rear armor could not withstand fire from small arms, and a significant problem was the crew's blind spot to the right side of the vehicle, where the periscope's field of view did not reach.

When the Warsaw Uprising broke out on August 1, 1944, two German Hetzer vehicles were sent to support German units. While passing through Nemocnična Street towards Napoleon Square, one of the two vehicles was attacked by insurgents and heavily damaged. Fighters of the Home Army took control of the vehicle, performed necessary repairs, and moved the tank to a barricade between Sienkiewict and Boduen streets to prevent a German breakthrough. The further fate of the tank is unclear. On September 4, Warsaw was heavily bombed by the Germans, including the barricade area. Chwat was eventually discovered during debris removal in 1946 and transported to the Polish Army Museum. In 1950, Stalin ordered its destruction as a symbol of Polish resistance. Only one running wheel was preserved, saved from scrapping by a museum employee.
