You know that:

• Titanic was an Olympic-class ocean liner commissioned by the White Star Line in 1908.
• Construction of the ship began on 31 March 1909 at the Belfast shipyard of Harland & Wolff.
• At the time, it was the largest passenger liner in the world designed to carry passengers and mail between Europe and America.
• Chief designer Thomas Andrews proposed a number of innovative solutions, including watertight safety bulkheads, which convinced the young designer that the ship was unsinkable.
• The ship's decks were divided into classes. The first class abounded in ostentatious luxuries such as a telephone communication system, library, barber shop, swimming pool, gymnasium, playground, and Turkish bath.
• Only the very wealthy could afford first class travel. The price of a ticket for a saloon cabin would be about 117 340 € at today's prices.
• However, no amount of wealth could save the passengers from the disaster that occurred shortly after the sailing ceremony.
• On her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York on 14 April 1912 at 23:40, Titanic struck an iceberg and disappeared beneath the icy Atlantic at 02:20 on the morning of 15 April.
• About 1,500 passengers died in the tragedy.
• The Titanic disaster is probably the most famous shipping tragedy, but certainly not the largest in terms of the number of victims. That was the sinking of the German ship Gustloff in which over 9 400 people died after Soviet torpedoing.
• The publicity of the tragedy of the Titanic disaster was caused by the presence on board of the richest people on the planet. News of the tragedy immediately flooded the front pages of the world's newspapers.
• The tragedy, in which many wealthy people from banking, show business and manufacturers died, even rocked the financial market in America and Europe.
