The famous Italian Maserati brand was founded in 1914, when brothers Alfieri, Ettore and Ernesto began modifying cars for racing. In 1926, the first car featuring the famous trident emblem was created – the Maserati Tipo 26 racing car. Maserati gradually built a reputation as a highly successful racing brand. After World War II, however, Maserati increasingly focused on road cars, and in 1947 the Maserati A6 1500 was introduced, which is considered the brand's first road-going Gran Turismo. The idea of combining sporting performance, luxury and comfort on long journeys later became one of Maserati's defining characteristics.

The story of the GranCabrio began in 2009, when Maserati introduced the first car to bear this name. Its premiere took place on 15 September 2009 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The GranCabrio was a significant new model for Maserati – it was the first four-seat convertible in the history of the brand. It was based on the GranTurismo platform, but instead of a fixed roof it received a classic electrically operated fabric roof.

The first generation was produced until 2019. However, Maserati had already begun developing a completely new generation of GranTurismo models in 2017, along with the GranCabrio range based on the same engineering principles. From the beginning, the engineers therefore knew that the car would not have a fixed roof, so they developed a rigid yet relatively lightweight structure using mainly aluminium, magnesium and high-strength steel. After many years of development, the new GranCabrio was officially unveiled on 29 February 2024 in the Italian city of Modena.

The car's fabric roof can be opened in just 14 seconds, even while driving at speeds of up to 50 km/h. The fabric roof was chosen primarily for practical reasons – it takes up less space when folded, allowing Maserati to retain four full-size seats as well as luggage space. Maserati thought of everything, however: the GranCabrio comes standard with an innovative neck warmer for the driver and passenger, while an optional wind deflector system can be manually folded down. The interior combines leather, Alcantara, carbon fibre and aluminium elements. There is also a digital instrument cluster and two additional touchscreens. Under the bonnet is a 3.0-litre V6 Nettuno Twin Turbo engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Maserati offers the GranCabrio in six standard colours: white, black, blue, green, grey and matte grey. However, the exclusive Maserati Fuoriserie programme offers a further 26 special colours, including red and yellow.
