The Renault 5 E-Tech car models in 1:35 scale follow the design lines of the real vehicle. The assembled model features an interior with seats and a steering wheel, rear-view mirrors on both sides, a black roof, and details applied using high-quality and durable printing. The first Renault 5 cars rolled off the production line in 1972 and became an instant hit. Designer Michel Boué perfectly captured the taste of domestic customers—and not only there. Renault 5 was gradually produced in Spain, Venezuela, Slovenia, Iran, and the USA as well. The small city car was easy to park in crowded French cities, could pass through the narrow streets of southern Italy, and did not ruin the budgets of Spanish customers. The car was so popular that more than 5,500,000 units were produced in total. Its only serious competitor in the 1980s was the Fiat 850. And now imagine that the Renault 5 almost never came into existence. Michel Boué drew the shapes of the car at home in his spare time just for fun and had no intention of presenting them to anyone. He simply enjoyed sketching them at home. The drawing was accidentally discovered by Renault’s technical director Fernand Picard, who immediately recognized the potential of the modern design.

And then it all began. The project was approved several times and then cancelled several times again. The company’s management disliked the “too” modern look, recessed door handles, plastic bumpers, and short overhangs. They believed the car looked like a toy and would undermine the perception of Renault as a serious brand in the eyes of customers. It turned out that customers did not see the car manufacturer the way the management assumed. Renault still struggles with this issue today. The market expected a small, agile car with simple and easy-to-maintain technology. Renault delivered exactly what customers wanted and sales were successful. Since 2024, a modern E-Tech version has been available, referencing the original design.

“Michel was a true artist. But as is often the case with such people, he was not very practical in other aspects of life. When in March 1970 he could not come to the office because he had once again forgotten to refuel his car, I picked him up at his home so we could make it to an important meeting. He prepared coffee for me. While I was waiting for him to get dressed and ready, I browsed through a mixture of newspapers and photographs on the table. Under a copy of Le Monde I came across a drawing of a car. It was amazing—so modern, so elegant. It was exactly something I could not clearly define myself but precisely what I had been looking for as a replacement for the outdated ‘four’. Something that would stir the stagnant waters of the automotive industry. And Michel? He just shrugged his shoulders as if he wanted to apologize. He was a true genius.”
