Did you know:
- The Panzer I and Polish 7TP tanks represent the closing era of lightly armored vehicles at the outset of World War II.
- The Panzer I was developed in the interwar period under the cover name "Traktor," since the Treaty of Versailles forbade Germany from developing heavy combat vehicles. The Polish tank followed a different story. The young nation needed to build a new army, but the country lacked resources for a complete indigenous design, so they based it on the British Vickers tank.
- Both designs met the requirements of their time. Based on lessons from World War I, a tank was supposed to be ideally light and, above all, highly mobile. That, however, was soon to change.
- According to surviving records, these two armored vehicles first clashed on the very first day of the German invasion. In the forested surroundings of the village of Mokra, a German reconnaissance unit from the 4th Panzer Division encountered a well-prepared Polish defensive position on the road from Kłobuck to Mstów. The Polish defense included a 7TP tank equipped with the most modern 37 mm Bofors gun. The battle ended catastrophically for the Germans. The Poles managed to destroy several Panzer I and Panzer II tanks, as well as many reconnaissance vehicles. The Battle of Mokra is still regarded as one of the most successful Polish armored actions in the war’s opening hours. However, it was not enough to stop the German war machine. The Polish army suffered from severe fuel shortages and chaotic command across its dispersed units.

From the memoirs of General Stanisław Maczek:
“We were defeated. The only way to continue fighting the monstrous Nazi regime was to flee to France. I managed to reach Paris with my family. The very next day at 10 AM, I reported to the French command. Surprisingly, I was treated with a measure of leniency mixed with condescension and slight disdain for our defeat. The rapid capitulation of France was yet another tragedy, but to my relief, the French finally woke up.”
