You know that:

  • The 126 was first introduced to the public in 1972 as an affordable small city car.
  • Customers received the car with embarrassment at first, as many of the parts and technical solutions were the same as the previous 500, so the Fiat 126 was all about a new body design that broke away from the original rounded shapes.
  • Over time, the Fiat 126 won over customers and eventually a staggering 4,673,655 units were produced.
  • Between 1973 and 2000, Fiats were produced under licence by the Polish factory FSM.
  • The upgraded 1994 version of the 126 el shared many parts with the up-and-coming Cinquecento.
  • The last car rolled off the Polish production line on 22 September 2000. Cars produced on this date have high collector value.
  • In the 1980s, the selling price of a new car in Poland was 69,000 zloty at the then average wage of 3,500 zloty.
  • The Fiat 126 was also of great political importance to the Polish government. The car's affordable price contributed significantly to the motorization of the country, where only 556,000 cars were regitrated by 1971.
  • Buying a new car in totalitarian Poland was not easy. The buyer first had to present a purchase permit issued by the relevant authority. And then it was just a matter of waiting a few years.
  • In almost every country where the car was imported, it acquired a nickname:

Croatia - Peglica (iron)

Slovenia - Bolha (flea) and Piči-poki (fast and powerful)

Hungary - Egérkamion (mouse truck)

Great Britain - Bambino (baby)

Cuba - Polaquito (a puddle)

Chile - Bototo (we prefer not to translate)

  • The car has also left a deep mark on culture, appearing in many movies, songs, online game, comic strip, and TV show.
