The story of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E actually dates back to the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, when Renault was looking for a way to transform the small and seemingly ordinary Renault 5, designed for everyday drivers, into a serious racing special. After several years of development, the Renault 5 Turbo was introduced in 1978, boasting an extraordinary design and a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The car later won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1981. Several other versions of the car were subsequently created, including the Turbo 2, which continued the racing success of its predecessor.

In 2019–2020, the Renault brand went through a turbulent period and, after several unsuccessful changes, Luca de Meo took over as CEO in 2020 with the Renaulution plan, whose main goal was to renew and make the model range more attractive. One of its elements was the so-called “return to the roots” – and specifically to one of the brand's most successful models, the Renault 5 Turbo, which evolved into the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric. Shortly afterwards, in 2022, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E was unveiled to mark the 50th anniversary of the original Renault 5. The car was developed in cooperation between Renault and Alpine, with Alpine being responsible for developing the vehicle platform.

Alpine engineers created a completely new aluminium platform, which was further complemented by carbon-fibre elements. This combination provided low weight and high structural rigidity. Alpine also developed a completely different type of electric motor from those used in conventional electric cars. The motors are mounted directly in the rear wheels, meaning that each motor drives one specific wheel. This solution enables faster and more stable cornering, acceleration and drifting, as well as an enormous output of 410 kW. Renault refers to this technology as in-wheel motors. 

The Renault 5 Turbo 3E is easily recognisable thanks to its wide fenders, distinctive side air intakes, low roof and wide track. The designers wanted it to be immediately clear what the car was based on, while at the same time making the Turbo 3E look much more aggressive than the original Turbo 5. There are only two seats inside. The seats are sporty bucket seats equipped with six-point safety harnesses. The seats and part of the dashboard are covered in Alcantara. A distinctive feature is the vertical handbrake designed for drifting. In the original Renault 5, there were 10 analogue instruments in front of the driver; in the new Renault, there are 10 digital monitors. The graphics draw inspiration from the original car and retro video games. In the original concept, the start button even featured the words “ Free play” instead of the classic “start”.

Renault plans to produce only a symbolic 1,980 units as a reference to the original Renault 5 Turbo, with each car individually numbered. Reservations opened in April 2025 and the preliminary price is €160,000 . Renault is also planning extensive interior personalisation. Customers will be able to choose colour and material combinations for the seats, dashboard, door panels and centre console. Renault even allows customers to create their own combination together with the designers.

“We wanted to make electric cars interesting and exciting, rather than just more robotic, white and slow things that people simply pass on the road. We wanted to create something special – a car that would be an event in itself, something astonishing, powerful and high-performing. The world is already stressful and boring enough, so I think a car brand should bring something exciting, lively and colourful.”
