The company Abarth, founded by Carlo Abarth, initially focused on manufacturing sports exhaust systems and tuning kits in Turin. In the 1950s, however, it began cooperating with the Fiat automobile company. This partnership gradually produced modified versions of production cars such as the Fiat Abarth 750, 850 TC and 1000 TC. In 1963, the most famous result of this cooperation was introduced – the Fiat Abarth 595. The car was based on the Fiat 500 D, which had become a symbol of affordable motoring in post-war Italy.

The engine capacity was increased, a sporty Weber carburetor was installed, the intake and exhaust systems were redesigned, and an aluminum oil pan with cooling fins was added. The vehicle retained the so-called “suicide doors,” meaning rear-hinged doors, until 1965. Although it produced only 27 horsepower, its low weight allowed it to reach speeds of up to 130 km/h (81 mph), which was remarkable for such a small city car in 1963.

The car could be purchased either as a complete sports automobile or as a conversion of a standard Fiat 500 using original Abarth kits. Abarth also had its own racing team, which became one of the most successful manufacturers of small-displacement racing cars in Europe during the 1960s. Among its most notable factory drivers was German racing driver Hans Herrmann, who raced for Abarth between 1962 and 1965 and achieved victories in circuit racing, endurance competitions, and hill-climb events.

In 2012, a modern Fiat Abarth 595 was introduced, paying tribute to the original Abarth model. Production ended in 2024 and it was replaced by the electric Abarth 500e and 600e. Although these models continue the Abarth legacy, they have not received the same enthusiastic response from fans.
