Complete COBI Roman camp construction set

Did you know:Complete Roman camp COBI CAMP Cobishop

  • The Roman Empire built permanent military camps called Castrum in the territories under its control.
  • Military encampments were always built according to the same scheme, with a rectangular ground plan where the shorter side faced the enemy.
  • The camp had a main gate, the Porta Praetoria, and a rear gate, the Porta Decumana.
  • Around the camp, auxiliary troops dug a one-meter-deep ditch called Fossa with an embankment Vallum. On top of the embankment, they mounted Pilum murale, which every unit carried with them. This created a palisade tied with ropes, about 120 cm tall.
  • In the center of the camp stood the commander’s tent with a room for the scribe and treasurer.
  • The camp also included soldiers’ tents, workshops, latrines, a field hospital, and stables.
  • The street Via Quintana led to the smithy Fabrica, to the storehouses Horrea, to the baths, and to the stables.
  • The focal point of the camp was the parade ground Principia and the commander’s tent Praetorium. The central street Via Principalis connected the side gates.
  • On the march, legions carried food supplies for up to two years. However, once a Roman camp was built somewhere, it always attracted local merchants and traders who immediately settled around the camp.
  • From preserved records, we know that the architect of the Roman military camp layout was Sextus Julius Frontinus, who described his work in the book Strategemata. The legions followed these guidelines, so every camp was built in the same way. The only exception was a smaller auxiliary fortress with a capacity of 500–1000 men.
