Did you know:
- The Celts (Gauls) were skilled opponents of the Roman Empire from the 5th century BC.
- Under the leadership of Brennus, they even completely sacked Rome in 390 BC, which caused a total shock in the Roman world.
- The Celts were finally defeated by Julius Caesar, who conquered Gaul, modern-day France, but we know that one small village „Le Village des Irréductibles“ was beyond his power.
- After the conquest of Gaul, the Celts were forced to serve in the legions, but outside the empire they resisted fiercely. The Celtiberians in Spain, as well as British and Irish tribes, managed to maintain their independence.
- The Celtic population consisted of hundreds of tribes, which were united not by a state system but by religion, led by druids.
- The Celts also inhabited the territory of today’s Czech Republic and Slovakia. This tribe, the Boii, gave their name to Bohemia. Boii = Boiohaemum = Bohemia.
Technical equipment and appearance:
- The usual equipment of Celtic warriors consisted of a long spear, a „Montefortino“ helmet, chainmail armor „Lorica hamata“, and a shield decorated in the „La Tène“ style.
- Popular was also the „Woad“ tattoo, applied with a blue dye from the plant Isatis tinctoria.
From the Jus gentium code:
„The Celts and all other barbarians cannot enjoy the same rights as Roman citizens, except for those who have served Rome and have been granted citizenship of the empire. Others shall be treated as all barbarians.“
