Roman Camp Gate COBI 20077 - Imperium Romanum

Did you know:

• The Roman Empire built permanent military camps on controlled territories, called Castrum.
• The section with the main gate Porta Praetoria is represented by this building set.
• Military camps were always built according to the same layout with a rectangular plan, with the shorter side facing the enemy.
• The camp had a main entrance Porta Praetoria and a rear gate Porta Decumana.
• Around the camp, auxiliary units dug a one-meter-deep ditch Fossa with an embankment Vallum. On the resulting rampart, a Pilum murale was placed, carried by each unit. This created a palisade tied with ropes about 120 cm high.
• In the center of the camp was the commander's tent with a room for the scribe and treasurer.
• The camp also included soldiers’ tents, workshops, latrines, a hospital, and stables.
• The blacksmith’s workshop Fabrica, warehouses Horrea, baths, and stables were connected by the street Via Quintana.
• The camp’s center was the barracks square Principia and the commander’s tent Praetorium. A straight street Via Principalis ran through the camp connecting the side gates.
• Legions on the march carried food supplies for up to two years, but whenever a Roman camp appeared in a region, it immediately attracted the attention of local merchants and traders, who settled nearby.
• At the gate, guards were stationed in groups of 4–6 men, rotating every 3 hours.
• From preserved records, we know that the architect of Roman camp buildings was Sextus Julius Frontinus, who described his work in the book Strategemata.
