 Did you know:

  • The first Russian stealth fighter, which actually isn’t very stealthy, has been facing major difficulties since 2000.
  • The foundation for developing this fifth-generation aircraft was technology obtained through industrial and military espionage from the F-18 and F-22 jets.
  • India was a cooperating party in the development of the prototype designated T-50, investing huge sums into the project. Disappointed by Russia’s approach and inability to develop based on scientific knowledge, India withdrew from the project.
  • Finally, at the end of 2010, Sukhoi managed to complete the first prototype, which took its maiden flight on January 29, 2010.
  • Initial tests were a major disappointment for the Aerospace Forces. The fighter, which was supposed to be invisible, was detected by standard radar at a distance of 150 km. The reason was poor assembly quality. Metal rivets connecting parts of the aircraft protruded so much that their reflection appeared on radar screens.
  • Despite all the shortcomings and typical Russian technical amateurism, it is a dangerous adversary.
  • The new radar can track up to 32 targets simultaneously and engage 8 of them.
  • The first serial aircraft were commissioned in December 2020. Air Force Commander Viktor Afzalov pointed out “reprehensible” flaws, but was later forced to retract his remarks.
  • Currently, the Russian Air Force operates 76 SU-57 fighters, and Algeria’s Air Force has 12 units.

Chief Designer of Sukhoi Mikhail Strelets:

The Su-57 incorporates features of U.S. aircraft (F-22 and F-35), but surpasses them in many ways.”

Valeriy Romanenko, National Academy of Sciences:

“The SU-57 is definitely not a fifth-generation aircraft—outdated engines, lack of integrated command and control systems, sloppy workmanship, and poor sensors. All of this needs to be redone.”

So, make your choice :-)
