The Bismarck-class ship was ceremonially launched on April 1, 1939, in the presence of the granddaughter of Admiral Tirpitz, after whom it was named. At the time, it was the largest battleship in the world, holding this title until the arrival of the Japanese ships Yamato and Musashi. From the very beginning of construction, the British Admiralty considered the existence of such a large ship an extreme threat. Initially, the British lacked accurate information about its true size, as official German sources stated a planned displacement of 35,000 tons in 1935 to avoid violating the Anglo-German Naval Agreement. The actual displacement, however, was 52,600 tons.

Once the Allies understood what kind of machine was being built at the Kriegsmarinewerft shipyard, they attempted to destroy it through numerous air raids before completion. The ship was not damaged by the raids, but the work was delayed. As the pride of the German Navy, Tirpitz was to be equipped with the best technology available at the time. Installed systems included search radars, artillery rangefinders, fire-control radars, and for passive protection, durable armor made of special chrome-nickel steel Wotan.

In June 1941, Tirpitz was deployed in the Baltic Sea to block battleships and supply convoys departing from Leningrad. After the loss of the Bismarck, the ship was “hidden away” for safety at Hitler’s request and moved to Norway, so that a potential loss of Tirpitz in the Atlantic would not further damage the morale of German sailors, who were still shaken by the sinking of Bismarck. The ship arrived in Norway in January 1942, where it was anchored in a well-guarded fjord. Life for the crew was very monotonous, and due to constant fuel shortages, training could not continue. The British managed to decrypt messages from the Enigma device and soon knew the exact location of Tirpitz. From that moment on, the Royal Air Force launched 12 operations to eliminate the battleship. Only the mission named Operation Catechism was successful. Bombers approached the German ship on November 12, 1944, at 9:35 a.m. A squadron of 32 Lancasters dropped 29 Tallboy bombs on Tirpitz, achieving two direct hits. A hit amidships caused flooding and a list. At 9:58 a.m., an explosion tore off turret C, which, along with its entire mechanism, was blown 25 meters into the air above the heads of sailors abandoning the ship. Tirpitz capsized and embedded itself into the seabed.

In 1948, the wreck was scrapped and removed.

It is now without the anti-aircraft protection it would have in Brest or in its home port. Cripple it, and it will not return to Germany.
