Did you know:

• The Soviet Union began developing the BWP-1 in 1959 as a replacement for the inadequate and lightly armored wheeled vehicle BTR-152.
• The designers’ goal was a vehicle capable of operating in contaminated areas in the event of nuclear war, able to destroy tanks commonly used at the time.
• Development did not progress well, so the Soviet Union resorted to industrial espionage. This is also why the Soviet vehicle shares many technical features with the German HS 30 transporter from 1956.
• The first vehicles reached military units only in 1966.
• An interesting solution was the placement of the 9K 11 anti-tank guided missile on the gun turret.
• Under Eastern Bloc conditions, it was considered a very good and maneuverable machine.
• A weak point of the vehicle was the accuracy of fire, caused by the poor quality of the barrel rifling. Designers compensated for this deficiency with a modified fire stabilizer.
• The BWP-1 was in service in more than 24 countries, including Sweden.
• Over time, 18 different versions were created, from the basic model, command version, recovery vehicle, to a vehicle equipped with a 30 mm grenade launcher.
• The BWP-1 was also produced under license as the BVP-1 and OT-90 in Czechoslovakia. Final assembly took place at ZŤS Detva and ZŤS Dubnica.

NATO internal report 1126a/1962:

“Soviet BMP-1 vehicles with amphibious capability increase the operational flexibility of motor rifle units. For the first time, the Soviet Union gains the ability of mobile guided fire against armored vehicles. The BMP-1 does not excel in firing accuracy at low elevation of the cannon barrel. In the overall review of combat-operational characteristics, the vehicle does not surpass the upcoming Marder and Bradley transporters and therefore does not represent an unacceptable risk.”
