The Boeing company was founded in 1916 by American aviation pioneer Wilhelm Böing, who had German roots and later adapted his name to William Edward Boeing. W. Boeing initially traded timber as the owner of the Greenwood Timber Company when, during his business travels in 1909, he saw a flying machine for the very first time in Seattle. The young businessman immediately developed a passion for flying and spent the following weeks learning to pilot. Shortly thereafter, W. Boeing damaged a borrowed plane, and upon learning how much the repair would cost and how long it would take, he declared: “I'll build my own plane. Better, faster, and cheaper.” Thus began the success story of the Boeing company. 

The 747 was the world's very first wide-body aircraft. Its distinctive silhouette with the raised upper deck made it an aviation legend. Just as Concorde revolutionized supersonic flight, the Boeing 747 transformed the public's perception of modern travel. A high passenger capacity, long non-stop range, and economical operation for its era made flying accessible to the general public. Boeing originally planned to produce around 400 units before obsolescence set in, but tremendous sales success reshaped all projections. The 747 remained in production until 2022, with a total of 1,574 aircraft built across various variants.

To manufacture such a massive aircraft, Boeing had to build a new assembly hall of gargantuan proportions. The facility even houses several restaurants and cafés. Inside the final assembly building, its own weather microclimate forms. Condensed vapor rises to the ceiling, and once it exceeds a certain threshold, it precipitates back down as indoor rain.

Unfortunately, accidents did not spare this legendary machine either. Over more than 54 years of service, 60 aircraft were lost to various causes, and many lives were lost. Despite everything, air travel remains one of the safest modes of transportation, and the Boeing 747 will forever stand as a major milestone in aviation history.

• While we commonly associate the callsign Air Force One with the Boeing 747, this designation does not belong to a specific aircraft, but to any plane carrying the President of the United States.
• The Boeing AFO entered service in 1990 and has undergone continuous modernizations.
• The exact military designation of the presidential aircraft is Boeing 747-200B VC-25. Two aircraft were built, bearing tail numbers 28000 and 29000.
• The famous 747 is a veritable flying fortress. Its fuselage is armored, and the aircraft features advanced defense countermeasures against missiles and drones. Many elements of its passive and active defenses remain classified at the highest levels.
• The aircraft's interior is distributed across 6 decks with a total floor area of 400 m². The upper deck houses the communications center and command post. Spaces used by the President are located on the middle decks, featuring an executive suite with an office, bedroom, and bathroom. All private areas feature star-pattern carpeting; access to spaces with this carpeting is strictly reserved for the President. Further toward the center of the fuselage are the Secret Service room and the situation room. The rear section accommodates a lounge for 70 passengers, a dining room, and two galleys.
• Every flight carries an onboard medical team capable of performing surgery in a dedicated operating room, fully stocked with a wide range of antidotes against poisons and snake bites.
• Regardless of distance or time spent aloft, every single flight is classified as an individual mission, planned in advance down to the finest detail. 
• During flight, the US military establishes a 5.5-kilometer security "bubble" around the aircraft, strictly barring any other airborne objects.
• The core flight crew consists of two pilots, a navigator, and a flight engineer, alongside support personnel. All flight crew members undergo rigorous aviation and survival training to prepare them for every conceivable scenario, including wilderness survival.
• Operating the aircraft is by no means an inexpensive matter: the cost of a single flight hour is approximately 4,500,000 CZK.
