Building set of the American Abrams A1A2 tank COBI 1025 | Cobishop.cz

Model M1A2 Abrams | COBI 2632:

The assembled model features a rotating turret with an adjustable gun elevation, opening hatches for convenient placement of the figure. Under the removable rear hull cover, there is an Avco gas turbine. The road wheels of the tracks are fitted with rubber tires, just like on the real tank.

Several shells are stored in the ammunition compartment under the upper turret hatch. A heavy M2HB machine gun is mounted in an articulated holder on the turret. Side armor is part of the model.

The tank tracks consist of individual movable segments, allowing the model to move easily on non-slip surfaces.

Did you know:American tank M1A2 Abrams COBI 2632 | Cobishop.cz

The requirement for a new main battle tank to replace the aging and obsolete M60 Patton emerged as early as 1973. Development work lasted three years, during which the U.S. Department of Defense had to revise its requirements several times. The tank was designed using the most advanced technologies of its time, with a strong emphasis on maximum crew protection. For this reason, the tank does not feature an automatic loader, and the ammunition is stored behind a sliding safety bulkhead. Due to the heavy armor and high weight, the designers abandoned the planned diesel engine, and thus the Abrams became one of the first tanks in the world to be fitted with a gas turbine offering impressive power and quiet operation. A real curiosity is the turbine’s fuel. Most commonly, aviation kerosene JP-8 is used, but the turbine can also burn industrial kerosene, diesel fuel, and gasoline.

By combining firepower, maneuverability, and passive and active protection, one of the best tanks in the world was created. The first vehicles entered service in 1980, named after General Creighton Abrams. The tanks undergo continuous modernization, during which they have been equipped with an exceptionally accurate “shoot-and-hit” fire control system, as well as armor containing depleted uranium, the exact composition of which remains a strictly classified secret to this day. The precise composition of the third-generation armor is known to only a few individuals, who have been assigned lifetime personal protection by intelligence services.

The modern chassis and tracks with composite components have a service life exceeding 4,400 km. At first glance this may not seem like much, but in the category of super-heavy tracked vehicles it is an exceptionally good figure. Despite the extraordinary quality of the armor, an incident occurred during the Gulf War that has never been sufficiently explained. One tank was hit during operational deployment by an unknown projectile, leaving a sharply defined, clean penetration hole at both the entry and exit points with a diameter of approximately 12 mm, and to this day it is unknown what weapon could have caused it. Currently, the manufacturer is working on another modernization designated SEPv4, which will likely be the last before the introduction of a completely new tank design. This is expected to be the M1E3 tank with an unmanned turret and numerous modern sensors for integration with other battlefield systems. Entry into service is planned for 2030.

In various versions, more than 10,288 units were produced by 1996.
