Building kit of the Volkswagen Passat model in a rich green color. The model features a number of details – an interior with front seats and a steering wheel, round headlights, and precise prints depicting a stylish chrome trim. This is the first model of the German automaker produced since 1973. The building kit is manufactured under the official license of the Volkswagen Group.
The Volkswagen Passat B1 represented a huge breakthrough for the German automaker – the model designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro was the first car to feature front-wheel drive and a longitudinally mounted front engine. This allowed better use of interior space and more stable driving characteristics. The body design was more aerodynamic and spacious compared to previous sedan models or the typically rounded Beetle. The strategy was to compete with more modern vehicles such as the Ford Taunus, Opel Ascona, or the Audi 80, with which the Passat shared its platform, engines, and many components.
The car received its name from the term “trade winds.” The name is meant to evoke movement, freedom, and smooth driving. Recognizable features of the Passat included simple angular shapes typical of the 1970s, a large rear hatch, and a minimalist interior. For its time, the Passat was a relatively lightweight, economical, and fairly dynamic vehicle. It laid the foundation for the long Passat model line that continues to this day.
Interestingly, the Passat B1 was sold around the world under different names depending on the specifics of individual markets. In North America and Canada, Volkswagen offered it as the VW Dasher – the dynamic name was intended to appeal to demanding American customers and emphasize the sporty character of the vehicle. In contrast, in China the Passat became a legend under the name VW Santana, where it gained enormous popularity and continued to be produced for another 30 years after European production had ended.

“You know, the Passat… it is actually the friendliest of all winds. It blows from continent to continent, constantly, without stopping. That’s exactly what makes them so remarkable – their consistency, relied upon by sailing ships and even airplanes. And the name? It comes from the Italian word ‘passata’, which means a passage or flight. The trade winds around the Earth form a kind of connecting belt… and honestly, I think we found the perfect name. It’s not just something random – it really fits. With the Passat, you can travel around the world.”
