VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (1974) Polizei MODEL | COBI 24642 

A model kit of the first-generation Volkswagen Golf finished in the classic white and green colour scheme of the West German police. The vehicle features the white Polizei lettering on a green background along both sides and a blue emergency beacon mounted on the roof. The interior includes two front seats and a steering wheel. The model is manufactured under the official license of Volkswagen AG.

After World War II, Volkswagen's entire production was essentially based on a single vehicle – the VW Beetle. It featured an air-cooled engine, a simple design and, above all, low production costs. Unfortunately, this was no longer enough to compete with rival manufacturers that were introducing far more modern vehicles. Volkswagen therefore launched the Passat and Scirocco models, both featuring a front-mounted engine and front-wheel drive. Eventually, the company commissioned Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro to create a completely new concept that was the exact opposite of the VW Beetle.

Giugiaro designed a car with sharp angular lines, flat windows and a short rear end. On 29 March 1974, production of the first Volkswagen Golf began at the Wolfsburg factory. The model immediately became popular thanks to its practical design and low running costs. It is therefore no surprise that it was widely used as a police patrol car, an unmarked criminal investigation vehicle, a courier and administrative vehicle, as well as by customs authorities.
Police versions were equipped with a blue beacon, reflective stripes, a radio, a document holder and a higher-output alternator.

The police version of the Golf was most commonly seen in Germany, but it was also widely used in the Netherlands in an orange and blue livery, as well as in France, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland. As part of cooperation between West Germany and East Germany, several Golf cars were even exchanged for industrial machinery and manufacturing equipment. However, East Germany never put these vehicles into service, as using a West German-made vehicle as an official state vehicle was considered politically unacceptable.

"...Between 1978 and 1979, East Germany imported 10,000 VW Golf vehicles. It is believed there were plans to use them as police patrol cars, particularly on the transit motorways. However, the Volkspolizei radio patrol car based on the VW Golf I was never officially put into service..."
