Did you know?

The Volkswagen T3 Transporter was produced from 1979 to 1992 as the third generation of the legendary Transporter and is one of the best-selling vans of all time. Thanks to its boxy design and lower engine placement, the interior space was increased compared to the previous generation. This made the vehicle very practical and versatile. Besides the classic minibus, it was also used as a camper, pickup, ambulance, or fire brigade vehicle.

The T3 fire brigade version was most widely used in the 1980s and 1990s. In smaller fire departments and volunteer units it was used even longer thanks to reliability, simple and easily repairable construction, and low operating costs. It was mainly used for transporting firefighters – 5–9 people could fit inside –, for carrying basic equipment, and for rapid response to incidents. It also served as a command vehicle equipped with radio communication. Some were converted into small intervention vehicles with a small water or foam tank for minor technical operations.

The Volkswagen T3 fire vehicle was used not only in Germany but also in Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, and Italy. A small number could also be found in the Czech Republic, although Avia or Praga fire vehicles were more common there.

What did a German fire magazine say about the T3?

“The Volkswagen Transporter T3 is increasingly being integrated into municipal fire brigade fleets. Thanks to its compact dimensions and good maneuverability, it is particularly suitable for urban operations and hard-to-access locations. The vehicle is mainly used as a personnel transport vehicle and as an incident command vehicle. It enables rapid deployment of crews and provides a basic working space for command operations.”
