A brick model of the Volkswagen Golf GTI in white with black side stripes. At first glance, the front grille with its distinctive red trim and four round headlights immediately catches the eye. Inside, the model features two front seats and a steering wheel. It is produced under the official Volkswagen AG license.
The Volkswagen Golf was introduced in 1974 as the modern successor to the legendary Beetle. The sporty Golf GTI version was created as a secret project by a small group of enthusiastic engineers within Volkswagen. In 1974, a team of designers began working on a high-performance version of the standard Golf without official approval from company management. Their goal was to build a lightweight, fun-to-drive, and affordable car that combined the practicality of a compact hatchback with sporty driving characteristics. The project was given the designation EA195 and later became known as the GTI – Grand Turismo Injection.
The Golf GTI made its public debut at the 1975 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, with series production beginning shortly afterward in 1976. Volkswagen originally planned to build only 5,000 units to recover development costs. However, demand far exceeded expectations, turning what began as a small experiment into a completely new automotive phenomenon. The Golf GTI combined everyday practicality, low running costs, exciting performance, and above all, an affordable price.
The GTI featured black plastic wheel arch extensions, a sporty front spoiler, wider tires, a red grille surround, black exterior trim instead of chrome accents, and the GTI badge in the grille. Inside, it offered iconic tartan sports seats, a three-spoke sports steering wheel, and the famous golf-ball-shaped gear knob. The biggest difference compared to the standard Golf was the engine. Thanks to the Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection system, it delivered more power and more precise fuel metering. While the standard Golf came with a four-speed gearbox, the GTI received a five-speed manual transmission, providing better acceleration, lower engine speeds on the highway, and a higher top speed. Four front headlights were also available as an optional feature.
Today, the eighth generation of the world's most successful compact sports car is already in production.
