Model Volkswagen Passat B1 Variant | COBI-24641

The model was designed by the renowned Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, who also designed the Škoda 720 model.

Production of the model began in the German city of Emden and the car manufacturer mainly targeted the so-called middle class with this vehicle. Most versions were produced with petrol four-cylinder engines, the most popular being the version with a 1297 cm³ engine. It was the cheapest and had the lowest fuel consumption. Production first started with the Passat hatchback, and a year later the Variant station wagon version was introduced. It became popular with families thanks to its large trunk capacity. The Passat became one of Volkswagen’s first family station wagons with a large trunk and a liftback tailgate.

In 1976 Volkswagen celebrated its one-millionth car sold – which was a huge success at the time. In 1977 the Passat was modernized and received a new plastic front grille, more modern rear lights and an updated interior.
The first generation Passat was especially known for colors such as red, green, yellow, beige and blue.

What Passat designer Giorgetto Giugiaro said:

"They told me they didn’t want me to design just a single model, but a whole range of cars that would share a common family feature. When I design, I imagine that I am the first buyer… when someone says the public demands this or that style, it’s not true. And so, even though some engineers strongly opposed my designs, the Golf was born, its larger version – the ‘Grande Golf’ – and finally the Passat, which at that time still carried the secret code name EA 272. How long did the work on EA 272 take? Not as long as you might think. I received the commission in January 1970 and presented the project already in May."
