Did you know:

  • Standardized Type 667 bunkers from 1943 were constructed on defensive positions in many locations in southern France, as well as in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Belgium.
  • In southern France alone, more than 30 of these bunkers still remain.
  • Before building the strongpoint, approximately 200 m³ of rock and soil had to be moved.
  • The construction itself consumed 9 000 kg of reinforcing steel and 165 m³ of concrete.
  • The first bunkers had walls 200 cm thick, but as resources dwindled during the war, wall thickness was reduced to 150 cm and later even to just 1 m.
  • The design was purely defensive; the bunker was not intended for long-term accommodation of the crew.
  • Perhaps the most famous example is the Regelbau 667 located at Omaha Beach in the Easy Red sector, which was also the first to be captured by the Allies on D-Day.
  • The structure was equipped with a fixed cannon and an onboard magazine holding 144 rounds of ammunition.
  • A total of 570 bunkers were built between 1943 and 1945.

From the memoirs of Lieutenant Ernest V. Helms, 9 June 1944:

“From the rocky slopes of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer in the Easy Red sector came heavy fire that terrorised the 2nd Armored Division. It was virtually impossible to approach the bunker. Shortly after eleven o’clock, soldiers of the 16th Regiment, 29th US Division managed to encircle the bunker. The final blow to this ordeal was delivered by Sergeant Hass of the 467th Anti-Aircraft Battalion, who disabled the bunker’s gun with a precise shot from his half-track.”
