Did you know that: 

At the beginning of the 1980s, a new racing category known as Group B was introduced. Regulations were significantly less restrictive than in previous categories, providing manufacturers with vast freedom to experiment with power output, weight reduction, aerodynamics, and structural design. The result was one of the wildest and most dangerous eras in motorsport history. At the time, Audi held an immense advantage thanks to its Quattro all-wheel-drive system, but it soon became evident that traction alone was not enough. The original Quattro had a relatively long wheelbase, which was great for straight-line stability, but compromised cornering agility.  Audi needed a machine that was smaller, lighter, and far more nimble. The answer came in the form of the Audi Sport Quattro, featuring a wheelbase shortened by approximately 30 cm. The competition variant initially produced around 400–450 hp. Meanwhile, Audi also had to produce street-legal homologation cars to comply with Group B regulations.

In 1985, Audi introduced the next evolution: the Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2. This gave rise to a vehicle with widened fenders, a massive rear wing, an aggressive front splitter, side aerodynamic skirts, and an extremely potent turbocharged inline-five engine. The aerodynamics were strictly functional. The monumental horsepower required Audi to generate optimal downforce to keep the car stable at high speeds. In addition, Audi was developing technologies that sound remarkably modern today – such as an anti-lag system to eliminate turbo lag and an early prototype power-shift transmission, a clear precursor to contemporary dual-clutch gearboxes.

Just as the Audi Sport Quattro reached the pinnacle of its technical development, Group B was cancelled following several fatal accidents. The finest triumph of the Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 was achieved at the 1985 Rallye Sanremo by driver Walter Röhrl and co-driver Christian Geistdörfer. Röhrl finished the event with an astonishing lead of 6 minutes and 29 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
